Fruit Fly Trap
Reviews, DIY Tips & Guides
The fruit fly is a species of the common housefly known as Drosophila melanogaster. It is a tiny creature, measuring in at between 1 and 2 millimeters long. Fruit flies have a short lifespan, living only about 30 days. They are easily distinguished from other flies by their red eyes and black bodies with yellow stripes on the thorax, abdomen, legs and wings. Though they are found in many places throughout the world, they prefer warm climates and humidity levels between 70% and 80%.
Fruit flies are attracted to rotting fruits, vegetables and other organic matter that has begun to decay. They are also attracted to fermenting liquids, such as wine and beer (hence the name “fruit fly”). If your home has an open jar of jam or jelly that you haven’t covered up yet, you may see fruit flies congregating around it!
Fruit flies lay eggs near food sources; after hatching from these eggs, larvae feed on decaying matter until they pupate into adult flies which mate (and start the cycle all over again).
